The Chambers family papers are a modest collection of correspondence, estate and legal papers, financial material, photographs, diaries and other volumes, and ephemera. Overall, the collection spans about two hundred and sixty years, but the bulk of the material dates from the 1840s to the 1920s. While the collection is probably most useful to family descendants doing genealogical research, it also contains useful land deeds that trace several early land transactions in Pennsylvania and Delaware. Additionally, the correspondence and financial material documents the daily lives and ventures of an early Quaker family that settled in southeastern Pennsylvania and northwestern Delaware. A brief genealogical report on the descendants of Richard Chambers (1775-1863) is available as an appendix on page 12. The Chambers family of New Castle County, Delaware, and Chester County, Pennsylvania, descended from John Chambers of Yorkshire, England. They settled as farmers on "Hopyard,"a sizeable farm that encompassed land in lower southern Chester County to the upper branch of the White Clay Creek in Delaware. In the latter half of the nineteenth century, several family members moved to West Grove, Pennsylvania, where three brothers formed a business distributing, among other things, grain, wool, lumber, and coal. This collection presents the history of a family that was among the early settlers of southern Pennsylvania and northern Delaware. The collection spans from the 1700s to the mid 1900s, and contains material, such as correspondence and bills, that documents the daily lives and ventures of individuals from several generations. There are also assorted estate and legal papers, such as deeds, indentures, wills, warrants, and bonds; photographs; ephemera; travel notes; and several volumes, such as daybooks and ciphering books.

John Chambers was a member of the Whig party and served as a representative from Kentucky in the 24th and 25th Congresses.
