Margaret Clyde Applegate was born in Franklin, Indiana in 1870. She was educated through high school in Lyons, Kansas. She came to Colorado in 1890, having divorced her first husband, George Ellsworth, whom she married in 1886. She remarried in 1897 to William Earl Robertson, and lived in Leadville for many years.
