Records of the Suffolk Guards, a Boston military club founded "to promote a taste for the Military Institutions of their country, and for the amusement of their leisure time," kept from 4 July 1819 - 15 July 1922. The records contain minutes of the meetings of the organization where such topics as parades, drills, the choice of officers, and discharges were discussed; rules and regulations; accounts; and lists of members.

Ten companies comprised the 12th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Militia: five from Boston, one from North Bridgewater, one from Abington, one from Weymouth, one from Stoughton, and one from Gloucester. After organization was completed, the regiment was ordered to Fort Warren in Boston Harbor.
