Letters, 1855-1906 (bulk 1860-1865).

Chiefly consists of letters written to Eichelberger from 1855 to 1906 in Urbana, Ohio. Most of these letters pertain to life on the home-front during the Civil War, but also include a few letters from friends in the Union forces. Includes letters from Eichelberger's parents and sons, including one from son George, describing his India travels during 1899, and one from son Fred in 1901, describing the reaction in Washington, DC, to President William McKinley's assassination, as well as providing an eyewitness account of McKinley's funeral cortege. A related collection is the papers of Robert L. Eichelberger, George Eichelberger's son.

President William McKinley was the 25th President of the United States. He was beginning his second term as President after winning the election in 1900. On Sept. 5, 1901 he and his wife were attending the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York when he was shot by as assassin waiting in line to shake his hand.
