This is a photostatic copy of a Civil War letter written August 18, 1864, by James L. Wheeler from the Ashland General Hospital to his brothers. The letter was specifically addressed to F.M. Wheeler. James Wheeler wrote the letter while recuperating from battle wounds. The letter described the departure of Wheeler's unit for Georgia, marches, and skirmishes and other actions in which his unit met Confederate forces.

James Wheeler was a soldier in an unnamed Kentucky regiment of the U.S. Army fighting in Georgia. The photostat was made in June 1928 for Grace Muncey Masters, first vice-president of the Kentucky Division of the United Children of the Confederacy, and for the Quill Club of the Kentucky Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
