Joe Engle (b. Aug. 26, 1932, Chapman, KS) was an Air Force pilot and NASA Astronaut. He was commander on the second flight of the Columbia Space Shuttle (STS-2) and mission commander on Discovery (STS-51-I). Engle also participated in the Challenger disaster investigation in 1986. Additionally, he was the Air National Guard Assistant to the Commander in Chief, United States Space Command and North American Air Defense Command (NORAD)before retiring from both the Air Force and NASA in 1986....
