William L. Hill papers, 1873-1930.

The collection contains personal correspondence spanning the last thirty years of Hill's life. In addition, Hill maintained extensive subject and clipping files, particularly as they relate to naval history, the Spanish-American War, and the Schley inquiry. The collection also contains Hill's military correspondence (c.1895-1922), U.S. Navy General Orders (1891-1904), personal photographs (1879-1920), and photographs of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (1904-1929).

William L. Hill was born on October 17, 1855 in Auburn, Iowa. In 1873, he enlisted in the United States Navy and began a career that would span a lifetime. Hill served on the U.S.S. Brooklyn during the Spanish-American War and received special commendation from Rear Admiral Winfield S. Schley for his bravery and fortitude.
