Personal correspondence and business papers. Personal items include family letters, including several to his wife while serving in the state legislature; and letters from Caleb Mills regarding the status of Wabash College. Business papers include receipts, financial records, and legal documents regarding his educational, real estate, and banking interests, including the LaGrange Bank of Lima, the State Bank of Indiana Lima Branch, the LaGrange Collegiate Institute in Ontario, Ind., and the female seminary at Lima. Also included are Williams' diaries, account books, and notebooks.

Caleb Mills (1806-1879) was born in Dunbarton, N.H. and graduated from Dartmouth College (Ind.) in 1828. In 1833 he began teaching at the newly opened Wabash Teachers Seminary and Manual Labor College (later Wabash College). Mills is best known for his theories and activities concerning public education in Ind. He married Sarah Marshall in 1833. The Wabash College Oral History Project grew out of the school's sesquicentennial celebration in the 1980s. Under the leadership of Eileen McGrath, the project focused on African-American alumni, faculty, and staff at Wabash College and on African-Americans living in Crawfordsville. Williams, Samuel Porter, 1814-1897

Williams came to Lima (now Howe), LaGrange County, Ind. in 1836, and worked as a merchant, banker, and real estate agent. He helped to found the LaGrange Bank, served one term in the Indiana House of Representatives, was the director of the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad, and owned an iron foundry.
