Stanton family papers, 1834, 1844.

Stanton family papers consist of an act of sale, dated Nov. 17, 1834, for two slaves purchased by William Stanton of Natchez, Miss., from slave traders Isaac and James R. Franklin of Sumner County, Tenn.; and an agreement, dated July 1, 1844, between the law firms of Montgomery & Boyd, Quitman & McMurran, and S.S. Prentiss stating the manner of distribution of fees for legal services in the case of the American Colonization Society vs. Isaac R. Wade et al. The court case concerned the execution of the will and codicil of Isaac Ross of Jefferson County, Miss., who had bequeathed his slaves and proceeds from the sale of his estate to the American Colonization Society, an organization founded in 1817 to assist free black people in emigrating to Africa. Isaac R. Wade was the executor of Isaac Ross's estate. The validity of the will was ultimately sustained by the Supreme Court.
