Holograph journal of Clarke's voyage around the world (New York-China-Hong Kong-San Francisco-Panama-New York) with her husband Josiah and daughter May. Describes Java, Panama, and country near Shanghai, Ning-po and Foochow in China as well as ocean travel aboard sailing ships (Surprise and Marmion) and steamers (Sacramento and Atlantic). Josiah H. Clarke's passport, 1864 Dec. 15, signed by Clarke and Secretary of State William H. Seward, laid in.

William Henry Seward was born in Florida, Orange County, New York, on May 16, 1801. He was the son of Samuel S. Seward and Mary (Jennings) Seward. He graduated from Union College in 1820, studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1822. In 1823, he moved to Auburn, New York, where he entered Judge Elijah Miller's law office.
