Progress report on Project H.A.I. - June 1969. 1969.

Summarises status of each part of Project; 1) Demographic studies - vital statistics for Northern Territory put on punched cards, checking of genealogies in connection with genetic studies; 2) anthropometric data - analysis of existing data by A.A. Abbie; 3) physiological studies - continuation of water balance studies, arrangements to study seasonality of conception; 4) nutrition and child growth - longitudinal study to be made of births in 12 month period; 5) genetic markers - blood samples collected for other work made available, papers in preparation, also notes work on dermatoglyphics & leucocyte antigens to be carried out; 6) special medical investigations - cardiovascular disease & treponemal survey, levels of gamma globulin types, virus antibodies, proposal to study chromosomes; 7) Czechoslovak expedition as part of I.B.P. to work with Rembarrnga people; 8) concludes that if project continues according to plan, majority of parts will be concluded by end of 1970.

Andrew Arthur Abbie, Physiologist and anatomist, was born in Kent in England in 1905, was educated at Sir Joseph Williamson's Mathematical School at Rochester. His family emigrated to New Zealand and then to Sydney and after a year in an insurance office he undertook his medical degree at the University of Sydney, graduating in 1929 after a brilliant undergraduate career.
