Interview of Capt. Neil Buschman, USCG, Area Operations, Atlantic Area, and Capt. Robert Teufel, USN, Branch Area Chief for Operations Management and Oversight, Atlantic Area, containing detailed descriptions of the Atlantic Area Command preparations for Hurricane Katrina including: succeeding on the operational level by providing a flow of USCG resources to the Gulf Coast.; coordinated an evasion plan that disbursed USCG assets away from Katrina's path and followed with recovery of USCG assets available in the area combined with assets brought in from other mission areas throughout the U.S.; coordinated the first search and rescue missions which later transitioned to house-to-house searches using a geographic mapping grid system of New Orleans; assisted in liaison work to coordinate efforts between the U.S. Navy and the Coast Guard; use of cell phones and broadcast television to retrieve updated information for assisting search and rescue missions; other topics include management and maintenance of USCG resources and sustainability of recovery efforts, force protection of USCG crews and civilians, and post-Katrina lessons learned and progress for future relief efforts in providing communications and equipment resources to the forward operating base and command structure.
