James VI was born in Edinburgh Castle in 1566, the only son of Mary, Queen of Scots, and her second husband, Lord Darnley. As Mary was forced to abdicate shortly after his birth, he acceded to the Scottish throne as an infant and was brought up to be distanced from his mother. Thomas Sackville, Baron Buckhurst, as the Queen's personal envoy, was sent to France in February 1571 to negotiate a marriage between Elizabeth I and Henry, Duke of Anjou (later Henry III, King of France). In August of that year Buckhurst accompanied the French envoy Paul de Foix to England to further the marriage negotiations.
