Princess Charlotte was the only child of King George IV of Great Britain and Caroline of Brunswick. She was doted on by her grandfather King George III. After attempts to betroth her to other European princes, she married Leopold of Saxe-Coburg, afterwards King of the Belgians. George Augustus Frederick was born August 12, 1762, the eldest son of George III of England and Queen Charlotte Sophia of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. He was created Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester on September 8, 1762. George Augustus became a knight of the Garter on December 28, 1765, and was presented to the public in October, 1768.
