Born in Chicago, IL, on May 27, 1859, Leander Hamilton McCormick was the youngest of four children of Leander James and Henrietta Hamilton McCormick, and a grandson of Robert Hall McCormick, inventor of the McCormick reaper. L. Hamilton McCormick was a noted inventor, author, sculptor, and art collector. He graduated from Amherst College in 1881, after which he studied law at Columbia University.
