Thanking him [in 1824] for a present, saying that although his neighbor, Mr. [John?] Crosdil, has often feasted on smelts, "he never witnessed their perfection before yesterday," reporting that Southey's "Thanksgiving for Victory" was rehearsed at Fuller's with Miss Stevens's nephew, "who is indisputably the best male treble in London," saying he recently dined with W. Linley, " & since with the popular Rossini," mentioning Pettet's coadjutors (Montgomery, Baillie, and Barton), Belman, etc.; saying [in 1827] that a reply to Pettet's communication must wait until Shield "has obtained a monitor who would conscientiously approve my being released from those fetters which have long been painfully felt, as they have proved the chief impediments to my wonted activity," and thanking Pettet for a brace of pheasants.
