Abbott photographed the house in 1937, when it was owned by J.P. Morgan Jr., as part of a three-year effort to document the rapidly changing metropolis. Her complete work, entitled Changing New York, was funded by the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration and was published by E.P. Dutton and Company, Inc., in 1939. As Abbott described it, the goal of her project was "to preserve for the future an accurate and faithful chronicle in photographs of the changing aspect of the world's greatest metropolis ... a synthesis which shows the sky-scraper in relation to the less colossal edifices which preceded it ... to produce an expressive result in which moving details must coincide with balance of design and significance of subject." The house was bought by the United Lutheran Church of America from Jack Morgan's estate in 1944. It was acquired by the Morgan Library in 1989, and is now part of The Morgan Library & Museum campus.
