Bidwell was a noted early Calif. pioneer, landowner, and statesman. He helped form the Western Immigration Society in 1840, which led to the formation of the Bidwell-Bartleson wagon train, the first emigrant train to Calif. Pierson Barton Reading was born in 1816 in New Jersey. In 1830 he moved to Vicksburg, Miss. to become a cotton broker. He joined the Peter H. Burnett party going to Calif. and Ore. in 1843 and split in Fort Hall with the Joseph B. Chiles' party. Reading settled in Shasta County, Calif.
