Reminiscences and notes from his diary, 1846-1848, sent to H.H. Bancroft in installments, Apr. - Aug., 1872. Recollections of the Mormon Battalion and the journey to California; experiences in San Diego; journey to Sutter's Fort; work on Sutter's mill and the discovery of gold; prospecting on the American River; journey of the Mormon wagon train from California to Salt Lake. With information concerning members of the battalion, J.A. Sutter, James W. Marshall, Samuel Brannan, the Donner Party, Indian depredations, and emigrant parties including that led by Joseph B. Chiles, 1848.

Ezekial Thatcher was clerk of the Parkville School District, Shasta County, Calif. He emigrated to California from Pennsylvania in 1850 and helped establish the first school district in the Parkville area. Henry William Bigler was born on August 28, 1815, in what is now West Virginia. He converted to Mormonism at the age of 19 and traveled to Far West, Missouri, with his family in 1838, although they soon departed for Illinois. In 1846 he helped lead the Mormon exodus from Nauvoo to Utah and was also a member of the Mormon Battalion. Sam Brannan (1819-1889) was born in Maine and moved to Ohio as a teenager. He joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and in 1844 began printing The Prophet, a Mormon newspaper, in New York. In 1846 Brannan sailed aboard the Brooklyn with about 240 other Mormons to San Francisco, where he was made first president of the California mission and established the California Star as the first newspaper in San Francisco.
