Ralph W. Chaney was born in Chicago, Illinois and educated at the University of Chicago. From 1922 he was a research associate at the Carnegie Institution and from 1931 a professor of paleobotany at the University of California, Berkeley. He was known for his ecological approach to paleobotany.
