William Russell Bascom papers, 1933-1981.

Papers related primarily to Bascom's lifelong work on West African art, culture and folklore. Contains personal and professional correspondence, field notes, lecture notes, course notes and manuscripts of books, articles and book reviews. Field notes document the Kiowa Indians; Afro-Cuban religion (santería); the Gullahs of Georgia and South Carolina; people of Ponape and, most extensively, the Yoruba people of Nigeria. Book titles included in the papers are Continuity and change in African cultures; African art in cultural perspective; Ifa divination: communication between gods and men in West Africa; African dilemma tales; The Yoruba of Southwestern Nigeria; African folktales in the New World; Sixteen cowries: Yoruba divination from Africa to the New World; and Ponape: a Pacific economy in transition. Notes and drafts for the unpublished book Yoruba proverbs are also included. There are also files concerning his membership in and presidency of the American Folklore Society.
