Commonplace book [manuscript], 1778-1790.

A book of the author's reflections (seldom does he quote any one) on many subjects, with an alphabetical index to subjects on leaves 1r-3v. An entry under the heading "newspapers" refers to a report on the "American war" dated May 29, 1778 (leaf 15v) and one under "theater" refers to "Macklin's case - and the case of the Ridotta Rioters at the opera house 1787 May 2" (leaf 111). At the end (leaf 118v) are a few memoranda, two of them dated: September 7, 1788 and 1790. Also includes a number of print portraits of Macklin throughout, possibly added by a later owner. Leaf 119 is a facsimile of an agreement dated October 17, 1768.

English antiquary and collector. He began collecting while at Rugby School and Oxford. On inheriting his father's estate at Middle Hill in Worcestershire, Phillipps embarked on a career of collecting manuscripts and books. His collection of manuscripts eventually numbered over 60,000 items.
