The records of the Zeta of Ohio Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa document the multiple administrative functions of the chapter, including electing new members, communicating with the United Chapters, and planning for the annual initiation banquets and visiting scholars program. Minutes of chapter meetings are complete from 1907 to 1989, with a break during the war years 1941-44. Also present in the collection are the annual reports of the Secretary-Treasurer from 1945-1980, correspondence (1909-27, 1955-81), chronological files (1972-89), financial records (1908-87), and data provided by the Registrar's office (1985-88) used by the Election Committee to determine eligibility.

In April 1905, the General Faculty of Oberlin College voted to establish a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. The Zeta Chapter of Ohio, the sixth chapter in the state, was formally inaugurated on November 8, 1907.
