Clyde Holbrook was born in 1911 in Greenfield, Massachusetts. He earned the B.A. in Religion from Bates College in Maine in 1934, the B.D. from Colgate Rochester Divinity School in Rochester, New York in 1937, and the Ph. D. from Yale University in 1945. He was ordained to the Baptist ministry in 1937 and while in graduate school held pastorates at Weston, Connecticut (1937-42) and New Haven (1942-45).
