The University of North Carolina was chartered by the state's General Assembly in 1789. Its first student was admitted in 1795. In 1879 the Kappa Psi Fraternity was founded for medical and pharmacy students. A chapter was established at the University of North Carolina in 1915. In 1925 Kappa Psi officially split into the Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity and the Theta Kappa Psi Medical Fraternity. The two orgainizations then issued new charters to the chapters.
