Papers, 1680-1984 (bulk 1850-1975).

Collection contains multi-faceted documentation of the development and growth of the Presbyterian Synod of the southwestern states, particularly Arizona and New Mexico. Although the material ranges from 1680-1984, the majority of the papers span the period from about 1850-1975. Includes church history/minister biographies files and subject files describing various phases of church work, missions, schools, work with tuberculosis patients and Native American groups. Also contains an audio tape of an interview with Rev. Claude Morton in the audio tapes/photographic reproductions series.

The Transylvania Presbytery was organized by appointment of the synods of New York and Philadelphia. The Synod of New York made part of the Presbytery of Abingdon into the Transylvania Presbytery, which encompassed the district of Kentucky and the settlements on the Cumberland River. The Reverend David Rice, Adam Rankin, Andrew McClure, and James Crawford met at the Danville, Kentucky courthouse to organize the presbytery.
