Gerald G. Eggert was born April 12, 1926, in Berrien County, Michigan. He received his bachelor's in history from Western Michigan University in 1949, his master's in history from the University of Michigan in 1951 and his doctorate in American history from the University of Michigan. He joined the Pennsylvania State University faculty in 1965, formerly holding teaching positions at the University of Maryland and Bowling Green State University in Ohio.
