As Illinois’ 39th governor from 1976 to 1990, Thompson held the office for 14 years, longer than any other governor. A lawyer, the Republican Thompson has held positions as a prosecutor for Cook County (1959-1964), law school professor at Northwestern University (1964-1969), and federal prosecutor for the Northern District of Illinois (1971-1976). Speeches, press releases, press release index cards, daily schedules, correspondence and letters of honorary appointments. The collection includes copies of every State of the State speech and annual budget speech, as well as press releases made for various occasions during Thompson’s tenure in office. The press release index cards help to identify press releases by subject matter. Daily schedules cover the governor’s tenure, with the omission of the years 1980-1987. 3 photographs were transferred out of the collection.
