Autograph letters signed and initialled from William Ernest Henley, London and Worthing, to various people [manuscript], 1901-1903.

Correspondents: Blackwood & Sons, Mr. Brown and Mr. Richards. Also, a poem beginning, Thin legged & chested, slight unspeakably, written in 1875. A note by C. Baxter state that the subject was R.L. Stevenson and it was published as "Apparition." Poem listed in the Folger card index of first lines. (2) accompanied a gift of his Poems, 1898.

William Ernest Henley was born in Gloucester, and sufferred from a painful condition in his joints; his left leg was amputated when he was eighteen, and the right leg was saved only through experimental treatments of carbolic acid. He was accepted to Oxford, but couldn't afford to attend, and he tried to earn a living as an author, writing poetry and drama with some success.
