Three letters from Joel T. Hart, a Kentucky sculptor, to his brother, John Hart of Clark County, Ky., and an 1843 slave bill of sale. One letter, 1829 (as published in a newspaper in 1881), from Nicholas County, Kan., describes Hart's studies; one, 1884, from Florence, Italy, recounts his travels and inquires about exhibiting his statues; and an undated fragment discusses a niece-in-law who is trading on Joel Hart's reputation by using his surname.

Joel Tanner Hart was born in Clark County, Kentucky, February 10, 1810 to Josiah and Judith Tanner Hart. As a young man, he built stone walls and chimneys for a living and by the age of twenty-one was working in Pruden's marble yard in Lexington, Kentucky carving headstones and monuments. Hart began his career in sculpture when Shobal Vail Clevenger, a young sculptor from Cincinnati, encouraged him to sculpt a marble bust of Cassius Marcellus Clay.
