Correspondence, speeches and scrapbooks of Joseph Walker, member of the Mass. House of Representatives, including Speaker, and candidate for governor. Correspondence (1910-18) between Walker and William H. Taft, Theodore Roosvelt, and others concerns state and national politics, the Republican and Progressive parties and platforms (including national prohibition as an issue), and a constitutional amendment concerning direct elections. Among the topics discussed in Walker's speeches (1907-12) to the Mass. legislature, civic, and local organizations, are political parties, his change from the Republican to the Progressive Party in 1913, elections, and current legislation. (Cont'd) The two scrapbooks date from 1912-33 and contain newspaper clippings related to Walker's unsuccessful bid for governor as a Republican in 1912 and as a Progressive in 1914, his switch in parties, and his role in later state politics.
