Papers of Hall consist of compositions and speeches written by him in Fayetteville, N.C., where he was a student in the early 1840s and at Chapel Hill, where he received his A.B. from the University of North Carolina in 1847, and letters from him while he was studying law in Hillsborough, N.C. Included are letters, 1856-1868, from Hall and his wife, Margaret Dawson Hall, from Wilmington, N.C., where he was a lawyer, to his brother William, who was studying medicine in New York; a few letters, 1860-1861, from Hall while he was a state senator; and some civilian letters during the Civil War from members of the Hall family. Topics discussed include family matters, slavery, local and national politics, the University of North Carolina in 1853, and practicing law. Postwar items consist of a few scattered family letters.
