Papers, 1845-1978, bulk 1932-1975.

The collection includes correspondence, memoranda, scientific papers and other material documenting the lives of Marston Cleaves Sargent, and his wife, Grace Tompkins Sargent, known to her friends as "Peter". The accession includes material documenting the Sargents long association with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and their years in London (1958-1960) where Marston Sargent served as scientific liaison officer with the Office of Naval Research (ONR). The accession also includes an outline for Peter Sargent's autobiography and history of Scripps Institution, The Sea Acorn, (San Diego, 1979) and other books. The collection also includes material documenting Sargent Family history from 1888-1983 and material documenting the life of Harry James Tompkins, Mrs. Sargent's father. Harry Tompkins was a protege of Gifford Pinchot in the U.S. Forest Service. The collection includes documentation of his work in the Sierra North National Forest.

The evolution of the USDA Forest Service is rooted in the General Provision Act of l89l in which Congress authorized the President to designate particular areas of the forested public domain to be set aside as "reserves" for future use.
