Daniel Webster (January 18, 1782 – October 24, 1852) was an American lawyer and statesman who represented New Hampshire and Massachusetts in the U.S. Congress and served as the U.S. Secretary of State under Presidents William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, and Millard Fillmore. Samuel Phelps Lyman was born in 1804 and practiced law in Utica, New York, in the early 19th century. He joined the Anti-Masonic Party and corresponded with state and national political figures about political and party issues. Around 1836, Lyman became involved with the New York and Erie Railroad.
