Collection consists of the papers of the Dartmouth College professor, Robert Addison McKennan. Letters and other papers describe his career teaching sociology and anthropology at Dartmouth College, his participation in conferences and committees, including the Dartmouth College Athletic Association, the history of the Northern Studies Programs at Dartmouth, and the establishment of the Dept. of Anthropology at Dartmouth in 1967. Collection also includes material and mss. for his works, The Upper Tanana Indians (published as: The Upper Tanana Indians. -- New Haven, Conn. : Dept. of Anthropology, Yale University, c1959) and The Chandalar Kutchin (published as: The Chandalar Kutchin. -- Montreal : Arctic Institute of North America, c1965).

Vilhjalmur Stefansson was born on November 3, 1879 in Arnes, Manitoba, Canada. He attended the University of North Dakota from 1897-1902. He was voted the best orator in 1900, and also worked for the school newspaper. In 1930 he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree, only the third such degree awarded. He then transferred to the University of Iowa and graduated in 1903 with a degree from the School of Liberal Arts. He next enrolled at Harvard, graduating with a Master of Arts degree in 1...

McKennan was born in Helena, Mont. in 1903 and was graduated from Dartmouth College in 1925. He received his Ph.D from Harvard University in 1933, after completing field research in northwestern Ariz. among the Walapai Indians and in Alaska among the Indians of the Upper Tanana River.
