Petition to the [United States] Commissioner of Patents filed by Edward P. Coffin of Nantucket, Massachusetts for a "new and useful improvement in gold washing machines." A 3 -page description of the mechanism is attached to the petition along with a transfer of the rights to this invention from Edward P. Coffin to Willard Sears of New Bedford, Massachusetts. The only date included in these documents is 1849 with no month or day, even though space is provided for month and day in two different places. The year 1849 indicates that this invention might have been inspired by the California gold discovery.
