The English writer Mary Butts was born in Parkstone, Dorset, the daughter of Captain F. J. Butts (grandson of Blake's patron Thomas Butts) and Mary (Briggs) Butts. Although she earned a degree in social work in 1914, she devoted herself exclusively to writing from about 1916. Butts was married twice,first to the publisher John Rodker in 1918, and secondly to the artist Gabriel Atkin in 1930. She had one child, Camilla Elizabeth Rodker, born in November 1920.
