This collection includes biographical information, correspondence, newspaper articles and editorials, magazine articles, speeches and photographs. The collection contains numerous writing by Russell, both drafts and published, related to his trips to the Far East and Europe to survey farm conditions, the Russian-American agricultural exchange (1955), and the Wolf Ladjinsky affair. Correspondents include Chester Davis and Wolf Ladjinsky. The photographs document many of Russell's travels, including trips to Germany, India, Japan, Pakistan,, and Yugoslavia. The collection of photographs also captures Russell at meetings with various dignitaries, including U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Ezra Taft Benson, Henry Wallace, and President Dwight Eisenhower.

J. Stuart Russell was born in 1892 on a farm near Newton in Jasper County, Iowa. After graduation from Grinnell College in 1913, he farmed in iowa until 1918, when he served in the U.S. Army. From 1920 to 1925 he operated a weekly newspaper in Sac City. In December, 1925, he became Farm Editor of the Des Moines Register and Tribune and held that post until his death in 1960.
