Educator Blumenfeld was born in Wilkes Barre, Pa., the seventh child of Russian immigrants. She studied Jungian psychology on her own, and at various teachers' colleges and taught in "progressive" schools prior to her marriage to Gustav Blumenfeld in 1954.
