Dr. James Jackson and Dr. John C. Warren initially sought funds for a hospital in Boston, Mass. which would also be made available to student s of the Harvard Medical School for clinical training. It was incorporated in 1811 as Massachusetts General Hospital, and in 1817 Jackson and Warren were appointed as acting physician and surgeon, respectively. The first patients were admitted in 1821. Henry Chase Marble (1885-1965), MD, 1910, Harvard Medical School, was a surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital where he served as Chief of the MGH Fracture Clinic and the MGH Hand Clinic. Marble specialized in orthopedic surgery and injuries to the hand. Marble served as Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at Base Hospital No. 6, organized and staffed by MGH, in France during World War I.
