The University of Texas at Austin (UT) opened in 1883 with eight professors, four assistants, a proctor, and 221 male and female students. Lawrence Christian Biedenharn was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi, on November 18, 1922. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in absentia from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1944 while serving in the United States Army. He completed his Ph. D. in theoretical nuclear physics in 1950. After graduation, he worked as a research physicist at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee.
