Thomas Robert Bard (1841-1915), U.S. Senator from California from 1900 to 1905 and president of the Union Oil Company, was born in Pennsylvania where he studied law. He came to California in 1865 to take charge of the large land holdings of eastern owners in Ventura County and was instrumental in the subsequent development of land and petroleum in the area.
