Wirt County was named for William Wirt, who gained fame in Virgtinia as a lawyer and perhaps is best known for his role in the prosecution of Aaron burr for treason. Thomas L. Alfriend (1843-1901)was a Sergeant, of Co. B, 15th Virginia Infantry. He was captured at Sayler's Creek, 6 April 1865, and was confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, until 23 June 1865. After the war, he returned to Richmond and entered the insurance business. Frank H. Alfriend (1841-1887) was the younger brother of Thomas L Alfriend. He became a biographer of Jefferson Davis.
