The Church Missionary Society was founded in 1799 by a small group of laymen and clergy of the Church of England. It was originally named the Society for Missions to Africa and the East. Iris Wilkinson was born in South Africa and came to New Zealand as an infant. She was educated in Wellington. After she left school, she worked for a while as a journalist on The Dominion newspaper.
