William Chapman Ralston correspondence, 1864-1875.

Fragmentary collection. Primarily letters addressed to Ralston, reflecting his banking career, his various business interests, his association with the Oriental Bank Corporation of London, social engagements, requests to him for financial aid and help in securing employment, etc. Letters from Charles E. DeLong and Charles M. Fauntleroy relate to his interests in Japan. Copies of some letters written by Ralston also included. Also in the collection: miscellaneous accounts, promissory notes, receipts, etc. for Garrison, Fretz & Company, 1850-1854.

William Chapman Ralston, San Francisco businessman and financier, was born in Plymouth, Ohio, in 1826. He arrived in San Francisco in 1854, and ten years later, when he organized the Bank of California, he became one of the most important and powerful men in California.
