Revised typescript with extensive autograph corrections and additions in Lawrence's hand, including eight complete autograph pages in addition to the deletions and typographical changes. This typescript is the earliest known version of this work which was first published in 1925 by the Centaur Press in Philadelphia. Included with the typescript is a graphic showing the layout and typeface used for the spine of the Centaur Press edition, and an ink drawing of a porcupine used on the half-title of the same edition.

David Herbert Richards Lawrence was born September 11, 1885, in Eastwood, near Nottingham, to Arthur Lawrence, a coal miner, and Lydia Beardsall. He attended Nottingham University College, and in 1908 he took a teaching position at Davidson Road School in Croydon. Lawrence wrote in his spare time, and in 1911, with the help of Ford Maddox Hueffer, he published his first novel, The White Peacock .
