Dimitri Kessel photographs of Czechoslovakia, 1937.

Collection comprises an album containing about 350 contact gelatin silver prints, including several duplicates and black-and-white enlargements. Kessel took the photographs in Czechoslovakia, while on his first foreign assignment. During his four-month stay, he photographed modern architecture for ARCHITECTURAL FORUM, the Bata shoe works for FORTUNE, and completed an independent story on the Czech army. Before his departure, the first president of the Czech state, Thomas Masaryk, died. Kessel stayed to cover the funeral. LIFE magazine later published some of the photographs from the album in a 5-page feature on Czechoslovakia. Other topics include religious rites and buildings, as well as industrial and agricultural practices. A few of the photographs have captions or location identifiers.
