Papers of Ralph Goodwin, 1940-1980. 1940-1980.

The papers include the following: Letters, 1941-43, written by Goodwin to his family and various documents relating to his war service. Diaries, 1943-44, maps and reports documenting his experiences in a Japanese prisoner of war camp in Hong Kong and his escape from the camp in July 1944. Notebook, 1942-46, containing short accounts about the work of the Allied officers in rescuing prisoners from the Japanese prison camp in China. Correspondence, 1946, concerning Goodwin's appointment as Inspector of UNRRA. Correspondence, reports (including handwritten drafts) and minutes of meeting, 1946-47, pertaining to Goodwin's work in China. The subjects include security of unloading and interference with supplies and other problems in Shanghai. Papers, 1946-48, concerning Goodwin's work with the China Relief Mission in China. Other papers, 1944-80, including newscuttings relating to Goodwin, notes for radio talks in New Zealand, background material for his book Passport to eternity and a manuscript titled 'Fall of Hong Kong' (n.d.). New Zealand soldier and official. Served in China (1940-1941) and became a Japanese POW in Hong Kong (1942-1944). Goodwin escaped from the camp in July 1944. Served as an Inspector with the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA) in China 1946-1948 and UNICEF 1948-1950. Emigrated to Australia in 1958.
