In 1976 he was awarded a Senior Fellowship by the Literature Board and was also winner of the C.J. Dennis Memorial Poetry Award. Anthropologist and Anglican priest, Elkin was Head of the Department of Anthropology at Sydney University from 1934-1956, and held a number of professional and academic memberships. His main area of study was the anthropology of Australian Aboriginal people, with a focus also on the people of Papua New Guinea. He was also the editor of Oceania (1933-1979).
