Actor Peter Finch was born in Britain and came to Australia at the age of nine. He worked at a variety of occupations such as newspaper copy boy, hawker and artist's model before he began his theatrical career in the early years of Australian radio. Before the second world war, he appeared in several Australian films until Lawrence Olivier encouraged him to try the British theatre. He left Australia for London in 1949 where he had many stage and film successes until his death in 1977. ...

Tamara Tchinarova was born in 1919 in a Russian province that later became Romania. In Europe she danced with Ballet Russes companies. Tchinarova first came to Australia in 1936 on tour with the Monte Carlo Russian Ballet and later in 1938 with the Covent Garden Russian Ballet. She remained in Australia at the conclusion of the Covent Garden tour in 1939 and shortly afterwards met and married the Australian actor Peter Finch. In Australia she danced with companies such as the Borovansky Ballet. ...

The Australian Ballet Company was established by the Australian Ballet Foundation and first performed in 1962. In 1970 the Australian Ballet became automonous with the foundation of the Council for the Arts, now the Australia Council. The Company has undertaken a number of overseas tours.
